It was an eventful morning filled
with all sorts of critters. We
encountered 3 cockroaches, a millipede and a spider in house this morning. Oh joy.
In math today I continued to work
with the number line with the kids.
I noticed more and more kids catching on. I truly enjoyed teaching these lessons with the number line
because I know it is most similar to a lesson I would teach back in the United
States. I also know how useful the
number line could be for these kids, I just wish that someone had been in the
classroom observing so it is something they could try to continue to teach
after I leave. Sigh.

In English today Katie and I did
reading buddies again because of how well it went last time, and we wanted more
of our students to get a chance to try it (since the previous Monday only half
of our kids were there). Before the
period began Katie and I went to the school library to pick out some new books
for the kids. The books we had in
our classroom were much too difficult for the students and were not always
relevant, and they had clearly been there way too long. As soon as I brought the books to the
classroom the kids rushed towards the book bin to read the new books. Their excitement for the books made me
smile. It really is the little
things for these kids that make them happy, and how wonderful is that? We began the merge of our two classes
by having the students sing the Days of the Week song now that both classes
knew it. It was awesome! The kids
really belted it out and were having fun with it. After that Katie and I did another mini-lesson on how to
buddy read. Then we set the kids
to it. They did even better this
time than the last. And then with
the last ten minutes of the period we brought the students outside and made a
big circle and did a sharing activity.
We threw the Frisbee again and then the students introduced themselves,
told us which class they are in, and their favorite drink. The kids love sharing anything about
themselves, because like I have mentioned, they don’t really get a chance to do
that otherwise.

After school today we went to town
because I am having a skirt and blouse made for the wedding we were invited to
this weekend. I’m really excited
to see how it turns out! It should
be ready on Friday, and it will cost me $6 to have sewn and then $12 for the 6
yards of fabric, which will make me a skirt, a blouse, and another skirt.
