Lion and Kob (10/12)

P1 and P2 finished their exams early today, and the remainder of the day was left up to Katie and I.  My teacher left after the first period to go home for a funeral, and Katie’s teacher was helping in a class where a teacher was out because of a sick child.  Katie and I joined P1 and P2 and had a little end of exams celebration with our classes.  We started with a morning meeting where we had the kids greet one another with their elbows, then we had them share their favorite subject, and then we played a name game as our activity.  After the morning meeting we taught the kids how to play Sharks and Minnows, but we called it Lion and Kob so it was more relevant to them.  The way the game works is that all the Kob stand on one side of a field and then there is one lion in the middle of the field.  When the teacher yells, “kob come!” all the kob try and run to the other side without being “eaten” or tagged by the lion.  If the lion tags you, then you become a lion.  The game continues until there are only a few kob left.  The kids LOVED this game.  They got really into it-maybe too into it.  The children were quite rough with one another, as they don’t know any better.  This took some guidance on mine and Katie’s part, but for the most part the game went smoothly and everyone had a blast!  After lion and kob we played charades with the students.  It ended up being more of students coming up and making an animal noise and the students guessing what animal they were, but that worked too!

On our way home from school today we stopped at a craft shop in town that we had received a flyer for earlier in the week at the supermarket.  It was a small craft shop right in Kasese with some really nice things.  The women in the shop were very friendly and managed to give us some small discounts.  Katie and I also bought a new pair of shoes for Doreen and Samson, as small gifts of appreciation for everything they have done for us.  They were both really excited about their new shoes and both left the shop wearing them.  Katie and I couldn’t help but wonder if they have ever had a brand new pair of shoes before?  Either way, we were happy we could do that for them.
