My lessons today went well. I took what I learned yesterday; my students do not have
number recognition, and tried to incorporate some basic number recognition
things into my math lesson. I did
a couple counts with the kids and then we played Buzz. Buzz is where the students stand in a
circle and count by any unit (1s, 5s, 10s, 100s, etc), and then once they hit a
certain number, that number is designated as BUZZ, so that student shouts BUZZ
and then the count starts over.
These things seemed to help as well as just continually pointing out
numbers and making the students aware of what numbers were associated with
which figures. And even though it
went well, there is still a lot of work to be done here. The problem with this as that once
again the curriculum doesn’t really allow time for developing the basics, you
are just supposed to keep moving through the textbook regardless of whether or
not the students are understanding or not, or apparently have the background
knowledge or not.
Today in English we began learning about Clothing, so I
brought some of my own clothing in and we named it together, practiced
spelling, and drawing the clothes.
Once again, the children thrived in a lesson with real-life examples.
For dinner tonight we made Rolex, which we were super
excited about. We had had it to
eat at a restaurant in town and figured we could make it on our own if we just
bought some eggs. So we made the
chapate and then made an egg with onion and tomato mixed in it. Put the two together with a little ketchup
and you have yourself a nice egg sandwich. It is also very filling which is a plus. We will definitely be eating a lot of
these now that we know we can make them at home.
I was also able to talk to a lot of people back home tonight
which was awesome. I talked with
my Mom, Derek, Nick, Meghan, and Alyssa, and then I got messages from Holly and
Molly.
